As the largest city in Placer County with over 121,000 people, Roseville originally grew from a settlement around a stage coach station. As it grew, it opened its first post office in 1864 and years later the city was incorporated in 1909. Today, Roseville has a great variety of businesses, including a large amount of retail. The city had encouraged the addition of large retail centers, including one of the largest Auto Malls in the country.

Some of the area’s top employers in 2011 included Kaiser Permanente, Hewlett-Packard, Sutter Roseville Medical Center, Roseville Joint Union High School District, the City of Roseville, Union Pacific Railroad, Roseville City School District, Walmart, Telefunken, Pride Industries, and Cokeva.

Beginning in the year 1988 the city started on a plan for redeveloping the downtown core and spending tens of millions to revitalize its historic areas which had been in decline for a long time. Public transportation is available in through Roseville Transit, a public transit service overseen by the City of Roseville and operated by MV Transportation. In addition, Amtrak, provides service to Roseville at the Roseville Amtrak Station and is part of the Capitol Corridor.

On the educational side, the main schools that are in Roseville include Sierra Community’s, Roseville Gateway , the Roseville, City School district, The Roseville, Joint Union High School District, and the St. Albans county Day School. The college institutions include, the Herald College, aimed at students seeking business oriented careers, and generally offers two year programs. University of Phoenix is located in Roseville and offers a wide variety of degrees with the option of taking classes online or on campus. Chapman University, has an extension campus in town that offers classes at night and is aimed at working professionals.

The Institute of Technology is a technical school in Roseville, and offers career focused education in a number of fields, including culinary arts, business and health care.
