Which Rodent Do You Have?
Behavior: Rats are omnivorous and will feed on almost anything available to them including tree bark, meat and grain. While known for being eating machines, they’re equally known as hoarders; often stashing seeds and nuts.
Only adding to intense infestation, roof rats are prodigious breeders. At only two and five months, they can start having four to six litters per year, each litter consisting of six to eight baby rats, with a life expectancy of a year.
Environment: These nocturnal rats are commonly found in both urban and rural areas, and can easily adapt to a wide range of environments. Tending to prefer living in dry upper levels of buildings, these accomplished climbers are commonly found in wall cavities and false ceilings. While in their densely populated nests, infectious diseases may be carried in their blood and can actively fester and spread.
Behavior: By nature mice are herbivores; they prefer to feed on cereal grains, but will eat almost any type of food and food scraps. They require very little water, and are known to store extra food in burrows and other hiding places.
Usually associated with rodents are the diseases they carry. In the case of House Mice, the major health risks surrounding them include salmonella and leptospirosis.
Environment: The house mouse can be found in both urban and rural areas, will easily adapt to a wide range of environments and can gain access to a home through an opening of only ¼ inch.
